Hourly, fixed, or retainer?

Most independents mix all three, and your invoice should make the mix legible:

• Hourly is honest for open-ended work, but bill in blocks (a week, a sprint) rather than a stream of tiny entries — it reads as progress, not a meter running.
• Fixed-scope lines (a discovery phase, a migration, a launch) let you charge for outcomes. Put the deliverable, not the hours, on the line.
• Retainers work as a single recurring line ("Monthly retainer — October"). Bill them at the start of the period, not the end.

Terms that get you paid

Agencies and larger clients expect Net 30; solo clients can often do 14 days or on-receipt. State the terms and a due date explicitly (Billfold fills a due date for you). Pass-through costs — a domain, a paid API, a stock asset — belong on their own clearly-labelled line so there's no ambiguity about what's your fee and what's a reimbursement.
