What to put on a design invoice

A design invoice is a normal invoice with a few habits that get you paid faster and protect the work:

• Itemize by deliverable, not by hour where you can. "Brand identity design — $2,500" reads as value; "25 hours — $2,500" invites haggling over hours.
• List revisions separately. A visible "revisions" line (or a note that revisions beyond the agreed rounds are billed hourly) quietly discourages scope creep.
• Name the usage or licensing if the deliverable is artwork or a logo. A one-line "Usage: full commercial rights on final payment" prevents disputes later.
• Show a deposit. Many designers bill 50% up front. Put the deposit as a paid line or issue a separate deposit invoice, so the balance due is unambiguous.
